Vatican Necropolis Tickets
The Vatican Necropolis, or Scavi, is located underneath St. Peter’s Basilica, same as the Vatican Grottoes, but one level deeper. While the Vatican Grottoes are directly beneath the Basilica, the Necropolis is located around 5–10 meters below the Grottoes, making it one of the most restricted and archaeologically sensitive areas in Vatican City.
As such, Vatican Necropolis tickets cannot be booked online or through tour operators. Access is granted only by request and managed exclusively by the Vatican Excavations Office (Fabbrica di San Pietro).
How to request Vatican Necropolis tickets (official procedure):
Requests must be made directly to the Vatican Excavations Office (Fabbrica di San Pietro), preferably several weeks or even months in advance as places are extremely limited.
Official contact details:
- Official website: https://www.scavi.va/
- Email: scavi@fsp.va
- Telephone: +39 06 69 885 318
- Fax: +39 06 69 873 017
- Address: Excavations Office – Fabbrica di San Pietro00120 Vatican City State
The ticket price is €13 per person and includes the guided visit. No discounts available.
If you’d prefer to visit the Vatican Grottoes instead (located above the Necropolis and accessible without advance requests), here are some guided Vatican tickets that include St. Peter’s Basilica and nearby highlights:
Customer Reviews
“I usually hate guided tours, but this one changed my mind. Skipping the line alone felt like a small victory. The guide explained Michelangelo without overdoing it. Standing inside the Sistine Chapel was genuinely humbling. I caught myself just staring up, forgetting the crowd completely.”

“We almost skipped the Vatican because of the crowds — glad we didn’t. Booking tickets in advance saved us so much stress. The guide was warm, patient, and answered even random questions. The Sistine Chapel gave me literal goosebumps. Photos don’t prepare you for that moment.”

“I was nervous about visiting such a crowded place, but the whole experience felt surprisingly calm and organized. Our guide had this way of making history feel alive, not like a textbook. The final moments inside the chapel felt quiet and personal, easily the highlight of our trip.”

“We booked last minute and I expected chaos – but everything flowed smoothly from the meeting point to the end. The stories, the details, the art… it’s overwhelming in the best way. Standing in silence under that ceiling felt surreal. I walked out feeling smaller, but in a meaningful way.”

“The experience felt thoughtful from start to finish. Clear instructions, easy entry, and a guide who genuinely loved sharing history. I appreciated the balance between information and quiet moments. Standing beneath the artwork, everything suddenly felt very real and very grand.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the experience exceeded everything. The guide spoke with passion instead of rehearsed lines, which made the whole visit meaningful. When we reached the chapel, time almost slowed down. It’s one of those places that makes you stop, breathe, and reflect.”

“Traveling solo, I worried I’d feel out of place, but the group felt welcoming and relaxed. The guide encouraged questions and shared stories that made history feel human. The chapel moment was quiet and emotional — like the world paused for a second. I walked out deeply inspired.”

“Traveling with kids usually means rushing, but this tour was different. The guide kept things engaging without making it feel heavy. I loved how every corner had a story behind it. By the time we reached the chapel, even my teenagers were speechless — which honestly never happens.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Do I need to book my Vatican tour in advance?
Booking in advance is strongly recommended because daily visitor numbers are high and last-minute availability is uncommon. Reserving early helps you secure your preferred tour type, timing, and language, and also reduces the risk of long queues or sold-out entry slots during busy seasons.
2. What’s included in a typical Vatican tour experience?
Most tours include guided entry, expert narration, and access to major highlights within the visit route. Depending on the option selected, some experiences may also include small-group guidance, audio commentary, or extended sections of the complex. Details vary, so always review the inclusions before confirming your booking.
3. Are guided tours better than exploring on my own?
Guided experiences are ideal for travelers who want context, storytelling, and deeper historical insight. Independent visits offer flexibility and a slower pace. The best option depends on personal preference – choose guidance if you value interpretation, or self-exploration if you prefer navigating at your own rhythm.
4. How long does a typical Vatican tour take?
Most visits range between two and three hours, though some experiences may be shorter or extended depending on the areas covered. Travelers who enjoy exploring at a relaxed pace often spend additional time afterward revisiting exhibits or nearby attractions, so it’s best to keep your schedule flexible.
5. Are Vatican tours suitable for children and seniors?
Yes, many tours are designed for travelers of all ages. Families often appreciate friendly guides and slower pacing, while seniors benefit from accessible routes and rest opportunities. If mobility concerns exist, choose small-group or priority-entry options to reduce walking strain and waiting time during the visit.
6. What should I wear during a Vatican tour?
Modest clothing is required inside religious and cultural spaces. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and hats are usually removed indoors. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the experience involves extended periods of standing and walking through galleries, corridors, and historical areas within the complex.
7. Can I take photos during my tour?
Photography is generally permitted in most sections, but flash and professional equipment may be restricted. Certain sacred areas require silence and prohibit photography entirely. Always follow staff instructions and respect posted signs, as rules are designed to protect artworks and preserve a respectful environment for all visitors.
8. What happens if I arrive late for my scheduled tour?
Arriving late may result in missing the group departure, as tours operate on fixed schedules and cannot always be rescheduled. It’s best to reach the meeting point early, allowing extra time for navigation, security checks, and crowds to ensure a smooth and stress-free start to your visit.
9. Is accessibility available for visitors with mobility challenges?
Many areas offer accessible pathways and support for visitors with mobility needs, though some historical sections may be limited due to preservation constraints. If assistance is required, inform the operator in advance so arrangements such as elevators, adapted routes, or special guidance can be coordinated before arrival.
